Gladys Books & Wine is a Black lesbian independent bookstore and wine bar in Bed-Stuy, named after my grandmother. We're a community gathering space where books, coffee, and wine come together. We're looking for an experienced barista who's excited to be part of that.
Responsibilities
- Prepare and serve coffee, espresso drinks, and other beverages to a high standard
- Maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming café area
- Manage register transactions and handle cash and card payments accurately
- Restock and maintain inventory for coffee and café supplies
- Merchandise and maintain the bookshelves: organize sections, face out featured titles, build displays, and keep the store visually inviting
- Assist customers with book recommendations and general store questions
- Support event setup and breakdown (author events, book clubs, community programming)
- Maintain health, safety, and cleanliness standards throughout shifts
- Collaborate with the team to ensure smooth daily operations
Qualifications
- Previous barista experience required (espresso bar experience preferred)
- Food Handler's Certification required (or willingness to obtain one)
- Strong customer service skills and a welcoming, community-minded attitude
- Comfort with retail merchandising or willingness to learn
- Genuine interest in books and reading is a plus
- Reliable, punctual, and able to work weekends and some evenings
- Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment
Bartender

Gladys Books & Wine is an independent bookstore and wine bar in Bed-Stuy, named after our grandmother. By evening, our space transforms into a wine bar with a curated, approachable list. We're looking for an experienced bartender who can bring great hospitality to that experience.
Responsibilities
- Prepare and serve wine, beer, and other beverages with knowledge and care
- Provide thoughtful wine recommendations and pairings to guests
- Manage the bar setup, breakdown, and cleanliness throughout service
- Handle register transactions and cash/card payments accurately
- Monitor and manage bar inventory, including ordering and restocking as needed
- Check IDs and ensure responsible alcohol service in compliance with NY liquor license requirements
- Create a warm, welcoming atmosphere for solo guests, groups, and regulars
- Support event service for private events, author events, and community programming
- Maintain health, safety, and cleanliness standards throughout shifts
- Collaborate with the team to ensure smooth evening operations
Qualifications
- Previous bartending experience required; wine knowledge strongly preferred
- Food Handler's Certification required (or willingness to obtain one)
- Strong customer service and hospitality instincts
- Comfort working independently during slower shifts and as part of a team during busy ones
- Reliable, punctual, and able to work evenings and weekends
- Genuine interest in wine, books, or community spaces is a plus
